On-line Registration opens on July 7, 2018 at 8 a.m. PDT


Watsonville, CA – June 16, 2018 – The 14th Annual Monterey Bay Birding Festival
Association announces the opening of on-line registration on July 7, 2018, at 8 a.m. PDT.
Registration will be available at https://montereybaybirdingfestival.org/.

This year’s festival takes place Friday, September 28th, through Sunday, September 30th, 2018,
and promises to be one of the best ever, with exciting field trips, workshops, and speakers,
including many new offerings. Strategically hosted during fall migration, the festival affords
participants with the opportunity of seeing some of the over 200 bird species in the region on
unique land and pelagic tours, as well as whales, dolphins, and otters in the Monterey Bay.

Serious birding enthusiasts can add California specialty life-list birds such as the California
Thrasher, California Towhee, Bell’s Sparrow, Oak Titmouse, Nuttall’s Woodpecker, Elegant
Tern, and the endangered California Condor. Local birders will have unusual access to private
lands on some trips, and new birders as well as teens will find supportive leaders and trips to
boost skills quickly. Pelagic trips are available throughout the festival weekend, offered by
commercial operators through a separate booking.

This year’s exceptional speakers include Jonathan Franzen, renowned author, presenting:
Seabirds: Their Beauty, Their Amazingness, Their Plight, and John Muir Laws, renowned
naturalist and author, will present “Thinking Like a Naturalist: Reclaiming the Art of Natural

Educational and practical workshops include birding photography techniques for beginners
through advanced, birding optics demystified, bird sketching in the classroom and the field,
understanding bird language, Sea Otters at Elkhorn Slough, Peregrine Falcon and Condor
recovery, bird carving and many more.

To round out activities, the festival will hold: “A Taste of the Pajaro Valley” reception, featuring
delicious locally grown foods and wine; “Family Days,” hosted by the City of Watsonville

Nature Center; and a host of fun activities designed especially for families and children with bi-
lingual leaders for games and tours.
